Improvement to the access to Ullastret

A new roundabout and a car park will facilitate access to the archaeological settlement in the Iberian village of Ullastret

The Department of Territorial Policy and Public Works has begun work which will improve access to the Iberian village of Ullastret from the GI-644 road. The work will involve the construction of a roundabout and a car park on the GI-644, in order to regulate traffic and improve safety for pedestrians and drivers at the crossroad between the GI-644 main road and the old Palau-sator road.

Construction work will be carried out at a cost of 620,000 euros and will be completed in four months:

  • The new 38-metre diameter roundabout, will regulate the traffic and improve safety for pedestrians and drivers at the crossroad between the GI-644 main road and the old Palau-sator road.
  • The new car park, with a surface area of 5,460 m2, will reduce the difficulties in transit which are currently caused by the parking of vehicles due to the proximity of the access to the Iberian settlement.
  • The project will also include the addition of a 189 metre long and 5 metre wide stretch of road onto the old Palau-sator road, as well as the paving of 110 meters of the GI-644 road next to the roundabout.
  • The work will be completed with the installation of new horizontal and vertical signposting and an improvement to the drains system.

The Ullastret archaeological settlement, which covers various towns in Baix Empordą, has been declared a site of national cultural interest. The well-conserved architectonic structures and their location in an area of natural beauty are an excellent example of an outdoor museum situated in a spectacular landscape.
