The Department of Innovation, Universities and Enterprises has approved the calendar of bank holidays when shops are authorised to open for trade in the year 2008. The Catalan Trading Hours Act establishes a maximum of eight Sundays and bank holidays per year with authorised trading.

In accordance with this Act, the eight Sundays and bank holidays that the commercial establishments of Catalonia can remain open to the public in 2008 are the following:

  • 13 January: Start of winter sales.
  • 20 April: Spring season.
  • 6 July: Start of summer sales.
  • 12 October and 1 November: Autumn season.
  • 6, 14 and 21 December and 4 January 2009.: Christmas campaign.

Local councils may substitute one or two of the authorised trading days for one or two of their local holidays, provided that the General Trade Authority is duly notified there of prior to 15 January 2008.
