Signposting of Girona's Greenways

The Department of Innovation, Universities and Enterprise is to spend 900,000 euros over a period of three years on a project to increase appreciation of Girona's greenways. This project will start in April with a first instalment of 180,000 euros.
The aim of the project is to create small thematic signposted routes (focusing on landscape, vegetation, literary connections, geology, history etc.) which will help the public to discover natural and cultural resources near the greenways.
Under the title "Girona's Greenways, a path to understanding the area", the project is intended to highlight the heritage and the natural, cultural, historical and traditional features of the 23 municipalities and 135 kilometres of greenways between Ripoll and Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Many of the greenways are former railways which have been turned into paths.
To publicise the routes, informative guides will be published, designed for people of all ages. New information about the routes will be posted on internet together with details of each feature, which can be viewed as "e-routes" on PDA devices using GPS. The project has the support of the Girona provincial government and the municipalities through which the greenways run.
