Intermodal freight depot in the Empordą

1.4 million euros to be invested to adapt Vilamalla station to intermodal transport

The Department of Town and Country Planning and Public Works and the public company CIMALSA have signed two agreements with the Spanish railway company Renfe Operadora and the Barcelona Port Authority to promote rail freight transport at Vilamalla station (Alt Empordą) and create a future new intermodal terminal at Far d'Empordą.

The agreement signed between CIMALSA and Renfe signifies a new stimulus to operations at Vilamalla station. It will be prepared to handle container transport – normal and refrigerated – and can look forward to considerable development in the future.

The agreement grants Renfe a ten year period of use and exploitation of the Vilamalla terminal, which can be extended for a further ten years. It also commits CIMALSA to the execution of works valued at 1.4 million euros to prepare the terminal for intermodal container freight.

The new facilities will make it possible for Vilamalla station to handle all types of rail freight (containers, general freight and vehicles).

The new intermodal terminal at Far d'Empordą will have access to the two rail gauges. A joint company will be set up to undertake the development of the Vilamalla terminal and design the rail operation system for a future twin gauge intermodal station at Far d'Empordą.
