The 061 coordination headquarters activate the best response in each case using ambulances or doctors to make home visits. The headquarters also organise services involving health advice over the phone when a personalised doctor's visit is not necessary.
Hospitals are for really necessary emergencies. The emergency services departments at hospitals will see you when they believe it is necessary. This is in order to prevent over-saturation of hospital emergency services.
If you have a serious emergency, you can be seen to at any hospital in the public network.
Emergency care resources Within the regular opening hours of the primary health care centres (CAP), the same professionals who provide
primary health care assistance will also take care of emergencies, both at the patient's home and at the centre. After hours, you can go to the continual assistance centres (CAC). In the case of a serious emergency, you will be attended at any hospital in the public network.
Emergency care "in the street" The Department of Health and Social Security and the Catalonia Medical Guilds' Board have approved a document with recommendations on how to carry out emergency services near health centres. (You can consult this document at the Department of Health and Social Security's website). The recommendations emphasise that, in exceptional cases of emergencies where care is required in the street, doctors working out of health centres shall attend the patient. The document reiterates the obligation all citizens have to provide first aid, especially if the citizen is a doctor, as set out in the Medical Code of Ethics in Catalonia. These recommendations are available at all health centres that have emergency services and doctors.
