Catalan Organisational Model
The Catalan Histocompatibility Laboratory
The Catalan Histocompatibility Laboratory forms part of the Immunological Service of Hospital Clínic i Provincial de Barcelona and is authorised by the Ministry of Health and Social Security to act as a reference laboratory for transplantation in Catalonia. It has also received accreditation from the European Federation for Immunogenetics.
The Laboratory provides human leukocyte antigen (HLA) typing, HLA antibody screening and crossmatching to determine the compatibility of the donor and recipient.
Together with OCATT, it also coordinates kidney sharing between the procurement centre and the transplantation centre for renal transplants in Catalonia.
Coordination of renal donations and transplants with centres in the rest of Spain and abroad is done through OCATT, which handles all the processing necessary for sharing organs and transferring them to the corresponding transplantation centre.
