Catalan Organisational Model
The Spanish Bone Marrow Donor Registry (REDMO)
REDMO was created in 1991 at the initiative of the Josep Carreras International Leukaemia Foundation, with the support of the Catalan government’s Ministry of Health and Social Security, as established in the relevant cooperation agreement.
Under the terms of this agreement, the Catalan health administration undertakes to finance human lymphocyte antigen (HLA) typing of Catalan donors registered with REDMO and management of searches for donors on international bone-marrow registries for patients in Catalonia who do not have a compatible donor within their family.
REDMO is responsible for maintaining the bone-marrow donor registry in Spain and managing searches of its own registry and international registries for all Spanish patients who need a transplant from a non-family member.
It is also responsible for maintaining a registry of cord-blood units available for transplantation in Spanish banks and managing searches of international banks.
Finally, it promotes the donation of haematopoietic stem cells from bone marrow and cord blood.
