  Organ and Tissue Sharing

Transplanting an organ or tissue is now a common medical procedure. Clinical results show that such procedures are a practical therapeutic alternative for many patients and, for certain diseases, they are the only treatment currently available.

The advances made in this field have increased the number of indications for different kinds of transplants. However, despite the fact that Catalonia has a very high donation rate (30.4 donations per million inhabitants in 2006), the demand for organs available for transplantation far outweighs the supply.

This situation is currently the standard throughout the world and has made it necessary to pursue strategies that can help consolidate and build on the achievements made to date and increase the number of donations so this growing demand can be met.

That’s why OCATT started up its 2005-2007 Strategic Plan, which is designed to increase the number of transplants and help satisfy the demand for this medical procedure.

Among other activities, the plan provides for improving information systems, implementing educational programmes in secondary schools on organ and tissue donation, promoting the position of the hospital transplant coordinator, the regional coordination, the living donor kidney transplant program and the CatAssistol program for non heart beating organs.

Geographic and demographic context
Catalonia has a population of 7,134,697 (2006 census) and covers an area of 31,850 km2. It is one of Spain’s 19 autonomous communities, as provided for in the 1978 Constitution, which recognises the right of the nationalities and regions that make up Spain to assume independent control of certain administrative functions, including education and healthcare.
