Become a Donor
Being a donor means being generous and is one of the most altruistic acts
you can do for another person. When the time comes for your life to end,
you can help make life complete for other people who wouldn’t be able
to go on living without a transplant.
As a donor, you don’t lose anything, but your organs and tissue can
give the gift of life to others. |

For many years, Catalonia has been ranked among the countries in the world with the most solidarity when it comes to donating organs and tissue. But to stay in this leading position, everyone has to collaborate right to the very end. If you’ve decided to become a donor, the first thing you should do is let your family members and closest friends know. They’ll be the ones to communicate your wishes when the time comes, which is why it’s important they’re familiar with the decision you’ve made while you’re alive and respect it. Don’t let others decide for you.
Carrying a donor card with your personal documents helps reaffirm and bear witness to your decision. The card is nonbinding. If you ever decide to change your mind, all you have to do is tear it up.

Besides receiving a transplant from a dead donor, patients can receive organs and tissue from living donors. Though most transplants are from dead donors, organs (such as kidneys) and parts of organs (such as part of the liver) can be procured under certain circumstances from living donors, provided the donation does not endanger their lives.
In accordance with the legislation in force, donations from living donors are limited to situations in which the chances of the success of the transplant are considered very high. In principle, all healthy adults can be living donors, but it should be remembered that, like any surgical operation, a transplant involves certain risks.
