Programme to Guarantee Quality During the Donation Process
The major boost given to the different transplantation programmes in Spain in recent years is largely due to the effort made to find donors and harvest organs and tissue, as a result of the work of the many professionals involved in these procedures and, in particular, the hospital transplantation coordinators.
However, the shortage of organs makes it necessary to assess the quality of the process of detecting, donating and harvesting organs to determine the potential for donation and pinpoint areas for improvement.
The complexity of the process calls for continuous, thorough evaluation of all stages in the process to detect and correct any deficiencies. This cannot be done without the collaboration of all the professionals involved.
Moreover, given that the main limitation for further development of transplantation programmes is the shortage of organs, any factors that can be analysed and improved will have a favourable effect on the number of transplants performed.
With this aim in mind, a pilot study was carried out at 25 Spanish hospitals, after which the Spanish National Transplant Organisation (ONT) designed a quality programme that was introduced in organ procurement centres in the different regions in Spain starting in 1998. Catalonia began implementing the programme in 2001.
The three main aims of the programme are:
· To determine the theoretical capacity for organ donation of each kind of procurement centre (procurement centres are defined in terms of the medical/surgical specialities they perform, and particularly based on whether or not they have a neurosurgical service).
· To detect any losses of potential donors and analyse the causes.
· To describe any hospital factors that can affect the donation process.
