1. The general framework | 2. The 3rd Research Plan for Catalonia (2001-2004)

2. 4 Thematic Areas

As was explained in the previous section, the 3rd Research Plan for Catalonia is structured around one Area of General Progress of Knowledge and the seven Selected Areas.

2.4.1 Area for the General Progress of Knowledge

The aim of this Area is to promote and back high quality research in any field. The intention is to obtain maximum cost-effectiveness and impact in order to further social and economic progress in Catalonia.

In short, the Area for the General Progress of Knowledge will support basic or applied research selected solely on the basis of its scientific rigour and quality and, if appropriate, bio-ethical integrity.

Objectives

  • Promoting and backing high quality research in any scientific or technological sphere.
  • Stimulating the training of highly skilled personnel and their integration in the R&D system.
  • Reinforcing existing research groups and promoting the formation of new ones in emerging fields.
  • Favouring inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research as scientific progress is often made in the interface between different fields.
  • Optimising the efficiency and effectiveness of the Catalan system of science and technology by means of the creation of new, well-staffed research centres.

2.4.2 Selected Areas

The work in each sector will be managed and financed by the ministry (or ministries) of the Generalitat responsible for that specific area. ll activities will be co-ordinated by CIRIT as an inter-ministerial organisation in charge of monitoring the Research Plan.
