European Higher Education Area

The construction of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) makes it possible to strengthen the quality and international competitiveness of higher education in Europe, allowing an increase in mobility and in European university graduate employment. This system is based on a comparable qualification structure and, in the long term, will provide Europe with a basis for its economic and social growth. The Bologna Declaration of 1999 is the initial reference document for this entire process. This Declaration makes clear the reasons motivating the signatory European countries to promote the greater integration and improvement of European higher education as a whole:
  • Strengthening the intellectual, cultural, social, scientific and technological dimensions of Europe.
  • Recognition of the central role occupied by higher education and the university in promoting the mobility of citizens, the demand for qualified people and the general development of the continent.
  • An increase in competitiveness and the capacity of attraction of the European higher education system in the international sphere.
  • Promotion of the European job market in a changing context requiring life-long learning, the adoption of an easily comparable university qualification system and the ability to face the new challenges of the knowledge society with guarantees of success..
Catalonia is currently adapting university courses within the framework of the EHEA. Official master's degree courses commenced in the 2006-2007 academic year and degree courses will begin to operate from the 2008-2009 academic year.
