Catalan

Catalan is the language of Catalonia and is joint official language alongside Spanish.

There are two official languages in Catalonia: Catalan and Spanish. The two languages coexist comfortably and the majority of Catalans are bilingual. The Catalan language is present in every area of Catalan society.

Today, Catalan is spoken in an area of some 68,730 km2 with approximately 11,400,000 inhabitants, divided among four States (Spain, France, Andorra and Italy). Catalan evolved from Latin in the same way as the other Romance languagesand first appeared as a language over one thousand years ago.

Catalan is the language of the universities in Catalonia. However, universities are spaces of freedom and tolerance and either of the two languages may be used without discrimination. The option is even available for students to broaden their cultural horizons and learn a further language.
