Olot (27,299 inh.). Capital of the region of la Garrotxa. Intense cultural and artistic activity. Theatre, bullring, sport, cultural and recreational societies. The earthquakes in 1427-1428 destroyed the medieval village. Parish church of Sant Esteve (1763) with the altar of El Roser, the jewel of Catalonian Baroque. Sanctuary of the Mare de DÚu del Tura (restored), designed by Panyˇ (end of the 18th C. ). Cloister of El Carme, designed by LlÓtzer. Cisterna, a Renaissance construction. Old Hopsice, a Neoclassical building which is currently the Regional Museum displaying interesting objects such as an excellent collection of modernist and "noucentistas" paintings.
Notable houses: SolÓ-Morales, Vayreda, Trinxeria, Bol˛s and Ventˇs, displaying objects of furniture of great artisitc value for their style. This village, partly due to the famous Painting School of Olot, has become a relevant artistic centre. Olot also offers excursions to the nearby Volcanic Area of la Garrotxa, designated Nature Reserve.
