1955 José Montilla was born on 15 January 1955 in El Remolino, a village in the Córdoba municipality of Iznájar.
1971 He and his family moved to Catalonia and settled in Sant Joan Despí. He is married with five children. He studied economics and law at the University of Barcelona and is a public administration official.
1978 Joined the Socialist Party of Catalonia (PSC-PSOE). The following year, he put himself forward for the first time for election and became deputy mayor for Finance and Taxation.
1985 Was elected mayor of Cornellà de Llobregat, governing the city until 2003, after being re-elected with an absolute majority in the elections of 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999 and 2003.
1988 Assumed the presidency of Baix Llobregat County Council, a position he held until 1997.
2000 Assumed the position of first secretary of the PSC-PSOE, after carrying out various responsibilities.
2003 Held the post of president for the Provincial Council of Barcelona until April 2004, following extensive experience at the head of the institution, beginning in 1983 as MP for Public Works.
2004 March - Headed the PSC's candidacy in the Congress of Deputies for the constituency of Barcelona, and was elected as MP. April - Relinquished all posts in local administration and on 18 April assumed role as minister for Trade, Industry and Tourism.
2006 On 24 November 2006, José Montilla was sworn in as 128th president of the Generalitat of Catalonia in a plenary session of parliament.
