Alt Urgell is in the high mountains, the central
sector of the Pyrenees, in the upper valley of the
Segre, the river which flows down from Cerdanya
and forms the backbone of the region.
La Seu d'Urgell, the capital, is at the centre
of the plain of La Seu, a broad depression at the
confluence of the Segre and the Valira, which rises
in Andorra. High peaks of the Pyrenees (Salòria,
Munturull, etc.), the Cadí sierra, with its
unmistakable silhouette to the south, and a series
of side valleys, each with a character of its own.
This was the original heart of the great county
of Urgell, which expanded through the lands
around Lleida, and the
domains of the ancient diocese of Urgell. Agriculture,
which gave rise to a major dairy produce industry,
is now complemented by a huge growth of tourism, due
to the beauty of the landscape, the winter and adventure
sports, the architectural heritage, a fine gastronomy
and an excellent infrastructure.
